When you are active and wearing footwear, socks wick moisture away from your feet and keep them dry. However, if your footwear absorbs water and becomes "soaked", its breathability will be reduced. Moisture vapours will not be able to escape through the material, so your feet will feel sticky and damp. Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™ provides durable water-repellency (DWR) to your footwear, which prevents water absorption whilst maintaining breathability, so your feet stay dry and comfortable.
Use Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™ when your footwear becomes soaked with water...
Your footwear may become soaked with water simply because it is dirty. First try cleaning it with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™, and if it is relatively new or recently re-treated, the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) will be restored simply by cleaning. But once footwear has been worn hard, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™, and this should be done after first cleaning with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™.
Proper cleaning can be as important as waterproofing...
Using the correct cleaning product is as important as using the correct waterproofing product. Ordinary cleaning products leave a thin water-absorbing film on materials, which masks their water-repellency (DWR). Therefore, always clean your waterproof footwear with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™. Remember that dirt itself works against DWR, so regular cleaning will enhance performance.

Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™ is easy and quick to apply; either spray it or apply with a sponge to wet footwear. Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™ provides highly durable water-repellency (DWR) which develops as it air dries. It leaves a flexible water-repellent finish on individual fibres of fabric and leather. This allows moisture vapours to pass through, maintaining breathability and keeping feet dry. Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™ has been specially designed and optimised for combination fabric and leather footwear.
How to use
Apply Nikwax™ Fabric and Leather Waterproof by hand.
- Clean footwear with a damp brush to remove loose dirt. For greasy and stubborn stains use Nikwax™ Footwear Cleaning Gel.
- Shake well before use. Squeeze the sponge until the lock is released.
- Apply generously to wet footwear.
- After 2 minutes wipe off excess liquid with a cloth and allow footwear to dry.
Note: Light/coloured fabric and/or leather may darken after treatment. Test first on a hidden area.
Always allow footwear to dry naturally...
- Allow footwear to dry at room temperature.
- Paper can be inserted into the toe of the shoe to absorb excess moisture; this should be changed once damp.
- Footwear should be stored away from fire and heating appliances; drying too quickly can cause leather to crack and soles to delaminate.

How to use
Apply Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel by hand...
Recommended for Gore-Tex®, eVent® and SympaTex® footwear.
- Rinse the item with clean water to remove loose dirt and dampen the surface.
- Shake well before use. Squeeze the brush applicator to break the seal, or turn the spray nozzle to the "ON" position.
- Apply generously to the area being cleaned.
- If heavily soiled, scrub with a stiff nylon brush (e.g. a nail brush).
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- If required, apply appropriate Nikwax WaterBased waterproofing or conditioner whilst the footwear is damp.
Note: Colour may run, test first on a hidden area.
Always allow footwear to dry naturally...
Allow footwear to dry at room temperature.
