The dragon plays an important role in Japan even today, not only during New Year celebrations. Unlike Western mythology, the dragon in Japan is a mystical creature that is said to bring people good fortune. The katana has a hand-forged blade made from carbon steel with a fine hamon and was traditionally hardened. On the tsuba of this remarkable sword is depicted a dragon that encircles the blade. The sharp blade is fitted with a hi (fuller) that reduces the overall weight. The handle (tsuka) is made from wood, covered in genuine ray skin and contains two menukis. It was also traditionally wrapped in black cotton. The tang is particularly long and secured with two bamboo pegs (mekugi). The scabbard (saya) is made from wood and the blade collar (habaki) is made from brass. This katana was made according to original museum displays. The sword comes with a certificate of origin, wrapped in cloth and packaged in a high-quality wooden box. All measurements are subject to estimation.
