The Big Guide to Winter Hiking

Winter hiking is a perfect way to enjoy beautiful winter scenery and get back into shape after the holidays. If you are planning a hike into a snowy and cold area, read what you should not forget.

Proper planning

During the summer, it is not much of a problem if you set out on a hike later. The sun shines longer, and even in the dark you can return without major problems to where you came from. In winter, it is very dangerous to move through snowy and icy terrain after dark. Light is also a scarce resource, so make sure to plan your hike thoroughly.

Get up early and plan your route so that you manage to return while it is still light. Also allow for breaks and unexpected stops. Do not plan very long hikes that you will not manage to finish. Take your own fitness into account, and do not forget about the people who are going with you. They may not have the same pace as you.

Layer up and do not underestimate the whims of the weather

Proper clothing is essential. You should definitely layer correctly and not underestimate winter, especially if you are heading to higher altitudes. Thermal underwear, which does not let heat escape while letting moisture through, is ideal.

Do not forget about moisture, snow, frost and wind either. Several layers of clothing on the upper as well as the lower body are essential. You should cover all of this with something waterproof and windproof. Invest in a proper winter jacket. For men, a suitable choice is the PENTAGON ARTAXES JACKET with a water column of 8,000 mm, three layers and pockets for everything you need. For women, we recommend NAVAHOO winter jackets, which appeal not only with practicality but also with an attractive design.

Proper footwear

Sturdy footwear, which firmly secures the foot and ankle, is the first step against unwanted injuries. When choosing boots for a winter hike, keep a few things in mind:

  • comfort
  • quality construction
  • resistance to water and wind
  • ideally one size larger for better blood circulation in the feet and for layering needs

What to pack in your backpack

The first step is definitely a suitable backpack. Choose according to the route you are planning. For a shorter and less demanding hike, a smaller backpack is enough, for example the 15-liter backpack from MFH RECON.

For adventurers on long routes, there are various backpacks with a volume over 50 liters, into which you can pack everything you need and much more.

But what should you pack into those backpacks? Here is a brief overview of what should not be missing:

  • spare socks, gloves, a hat and a t-shirt in case what you are wearing gets wet
  • a map (paper or on your phone)
  • a flashlight or other light source
  • a phone
  • a first aid kit
  • sunglasses and sunscreen (do not be fooled by winter, the sun in mountain areas can be as strong as during a summer vacation)
  • a whistle (in case you need to draw attention to yourself)

Food and fluids for a hike full of energy

In addition to essential gear, do not forget to pack nutritious snacks in your backpack. Bring sweet tea or coffee in a thermos, and pack food full of carbohydrates that will give you energy almost instantly. So be sure to reach for your favorite sandwiches or protein bars.

Tip for deep winter: Choose bottles with a wider neck to prevent possible freezing if you are in a place where it is really cold.

Now that you know how to approach winter hiking, there is nothing left for us to do but wish you a lot of fun, great views, and good weather.
