Nomex, which thanks to its resistance can protect up to 370°C, is one of the highest-quality materials. Its fiber is so resistant to heat and fire that it does not melt, does not drip, and does not support combustion. Thanks to this, it forms an excellent barrier against the danger around it. Related to it are aramid polymers, which are also classified among stronger and more durable materials. It is produced through a condensation reaction from m-phenylenediamine and isophthaloyl chloride monomers.
Differences
The difference between Nomex and Kevlar:
Nomex = meta-aramid
Kevlar = para-aramid
In practice, this means that the strands of Nomex cannot align during fiber polymerization. They have lower strength and their final tensile strength is 340 MPa. However, since they are used by people on the front line, public service workers such as soldiers or police officers, speed racers, and also electricians, Nomex products simply must be flawless. Thanks to this, they have absolute chemical, thermal, and radiation resistance.
This meta-aramid fiber was already developed in the 1960s, and we owe this to the American company DuPont, which brought it to market in 1967.
